Wesley Nurse Program
When Methodist Healthcare Ministries established Laurel Heights United Methodist Church as a Wesley Nurse site in 1998, Wesley Nurse Judy Davis was assigned to our church and the Health Cabinet of Laurel Heights was born. After completing 10 years of service at Laurel Heights, Nurse Judy retired in June 2007. Programs that she began continue to operate and are open to members of the congregation and the community. They are:
  • Line dancing (weekly)
  • Fit City (monthly body analysis and weigh-ins)
  • Flu shot clinics (seasonal)
  • Health screenings (throughout the year)
  • Adult health education (monthly)
  • Home and hospital visitation (throughout the year)
  • Helping feed and clothe the homeless at Church under the Bridge (monthly)
The Health Cabinet exists to allow congregational participation in the ministries facilitated by the Wesley Nurse. In general, it is a ministry committed to promoting a holistic approach to health and wellness; that is, mind, body and spirit.  Opportunities for ministry with the Health Cabinet include:
  • Volunteer coordination and/or participation in the on-site Laurel Heights Youth Center
  • Medical mission trips to several border locations in Mexico
  • Planning and coordination of blood drives held quarterly at the church
  • Numerous other programs dealing with
    • disease prevention
    • wellness promotion
    • health education
    • health counseling
    • community outreaches
