If you think United Methodist Women are those little gray-haired women in sneakers, you are right; but you are wrong if you think that means we just sit around and do nothing or, even worse, do something boring or useless. Why do you think we wear sneakers? It is because we can move faster and farther.
United Methodist Women are always on the move.We have monthly meetings to get organized and stay connected, but we are constantly working to improve the lives of women, children and youth throughout the world which we consider a high-calling and a righteous cause.
We study and learn how women in other parts of the world are engaged in spiritual journeys much like our own. We support many projects at Laurel Heights UMC and throughout San Antonio, including Woman at the Well House, WesleyCommunity Center, Bible Study and lunch at San AntonioCollege, health kits for UMCOR, special Christmas luncheon for the shut-ins, and serving on many committees within the church. We support missionaries and mission projects on every continent. We have made dresses sent to children in Africa, supported youth trips to Mexico, and through special offerings supported retired missionaries living in retirement homes built for them by these same offerings.
We keep ourselves informed by sending one of our members to the Legislative Event each year in Austin, and we are ALWAYS involved in justice issues, such as children’s health insurance, education, the environment, globalization, and other cultures and faiths.
Every year scholarships are given to women in transition and high school seniors through the Mary Blackford Scholarship Fund. Many LHUMC members have been helped with their college education through this fund.
So you see, those sneakers come in handy to further the work of United Methodist Women in their calling to help women, children, and youth. Put on your sneakers and join us the second Tuesday of the month at 10:00 in the parlor.
And, if you don’t have sneakers, that’s ok. Come anyway. We’re so sure you’ll find the journey anything but boring, we’ll loan you a pair of ours.
