SA Youth at Laurel Heights United Methodist Church addresses vital community concerns by providing free, safe alternative programs at three San Antonio locations for school-age youth during critical, out-of-school time. The youth center is a collaborative effort between Laurel Heights UMC and SA Youth. The Center's program targets Agnes Cotton Elementary and MarkTwainMiddle School students and operates from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm during the school year and 7:30 am to 5:30 pm in the summer. Its primary objectives are: 1) to strengthen academic skills through tutoring, homework assistance and computer training; 2) to develop social skills through mentoring and positive reinforcement; and 3) to prevent inner-city youth from participating in delinquency and crime during the out-of-school time when crime peaks by providing a safe haven, recreation and adult role models.
By contract, only Cotton Elementary and TwainMiddle School students can be accepted into the program. Enrollment slots are limited; register NOW by calling the Laurel Heights Learning Center, (210) 735-6234.
