Summertime is when many families get together for some sort of "family reunion." The Lowry clan always gets together during the Christmas holidays, but this summer we’re going to expand our gathering to include the other Karbach relatives from around New Braunfels.
Mother’s family came to Comal County, Republic of Texas in 1845. David Karbach immigrated there from Germany along with his wife and children to begin a new life in a new country. He is my great-great-grandfather!
So, this month we’re going to get together to share family pictures, letters, and memories. One special item is a penny postcard that my cousin found which my grandfather, Frank Karbach, sent to his mother announcing the birth of his daughter, my mother, Marjorie Lee Karbach in 1912.
Families are important, and it’s good to be able to get together to remember "where we came from." I’ve always been close to mother’s family. I spent every summer during my high school years with my grandparents at Heimat, our Karbach family home near New Braunfels; so you see why Heimat is so special to me. Now, we’re going to get together to share our memories and the special, loving relationship we share.
We also have a special "family" relationship here at Laurel Heights. We have "family reunions" every Sunday where we are reminded of that special love we share as disciples of Our Lord Jesus Christ. This centennial year is an especially appropriate time for us to remember "where we came from" and the tie that binds us together.
We are especially blessed by our history, our traditions, our wonderful facilities, our common heritage and the Christian love (Agape) that calls and uses us to possess, keep and spread God’s love to our families, our friends and our neighbors.
I’m looking forward to the time we’ll spend together this month as descendants of the Karbach family, and I’m looking forward to this, my seventh year as pastor of the Laurel Heights church family. It’s good that we get together.
